I am using Excel 2003

is it possible to conditionally format just part of some text in a cell to a duifferent colour eg T-abcd-gyet-gb-123 . I want it to conditionally format the data between the first 2 dashes, but the text within this maybe of different length but will allways start at position 3 and end with the next dash

hi,

There is no Excel feature that CFs portions of text. This must be done in VBA.

I'd suggest reposting your question in forum707, if you're ready to code and run VBA with some help.

can you just format the part I wanted in a different colour then and forget about the conditional bit for now?

Conditional upon what?

It seems that you want a fixed format.

Regardless, as Skip has already noted, VBA is needed.

can you just format the part I wanted in a different colour...
Sure. Just SELECT the portion of the text that you want a different color and/or bold and/or italic and select the formats you want.
