I'm new to Actuate, however I'm currently in the process to analyze the integration of Actuate with our Java based application. Our intention is to - instead of accessing the db of our application directly - enhance the existing Java API of our application by certain methods providing the data basis (extracted from our db) for the design of user-defined reports afterwards. In that way we would introduce another layer between our application's db and Actuate. Why that? Well, mainly because our customers (using Actuate for reporting) want to:
1. Have the freedom to design user-defined reports from our application's data using their tool.
2. Have their reports to be automatically compatible with upgrades of our system.
Also, neither we want to migrate all our customers reports when our application is upgraded, nor do we want that all our customers need to migrate them.
Therefore we are aiming to sell our system together with a "standard" Java Reporting API that can be integrated with Actuate (and may be other tools). In that way, when it comes to upgrades of our system, we just need to ensure that the Java API owned by us is upgraded properly in order to reflect possible changes on the db layer.
My questions are:
1. Is it possible with Actuate to (RE-)DESIGN reports using datasets returned from a Java API, i.e. pick and choose from the API library and design the layout?
2. If not, what alternatives exists in order to achieve the goals mentioned above?
Any kind of feedback, examples, support is very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
