I recently got a new Asus motherboard and RAM; to work with a used Duron processor I had. After getting everything into an existing case; I powered the system on; and it lasts for about a second then powers down. The fan on the CPU begins to spin then stops. The LED light on the motherboard is on to show there is power attached. This case was holding and is now hold my old mb with an old Celeron 400mhz CPU.. So I'm wondering if it's a case of fualty power supply or is the Duron processor fried? When there is no processor in the new mb and I turn it on; it does stay on but just does nothing; obviously. Anyway, any thoughts on where my problem is coming from? Thank you..

Need more details on your system. Is the CPU on backwards?

Umm...you can't put a CPU in the socket backwards. The pins are keyed with one corner being different from the other three. If you put it in incorrectly, it will be obvious.

My guess is the PSU. How many other components are plugged into the CPU? How powerful is it? It's possible that's it's just not strong enough.

The power supply is 300W, I don't really have anything else plugged into the mother board except for a ATI Radeon video card; an older one. The new motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-E, with a Duron 1Ghz CPU in it. The FSB has been lowered to 200Mhz on the motherboard for the Duron processor. I guess what confuses me is that the system runs with the power supply on my Celeron processor & motherboard; and because it's an older board I have the ATI video card; PCI Ethernet card; and ISA modem in there as expansion cards. Also have 4 IDE devices hooked up. Hopefully that extra info might help.. Thanks.

have you plugged in the cpu power lead?

Try reseting the Bios, check your ram make sure its ok, then attach only the the proc, ram and hard drive NOTHING ELSE see if it powers up and stays on, then shut it off and add ONE more device like the Video card in then start it again, continue to do this tell you have all your devices installed, if it doesnt start right after you have put say for example the ethernet card then that might be your problem it might be that you have a bad device in the mix, I have run into this sort of thing at my computer shop, and its usually something other than the MoBo that is causeing the problem, just add one thing at a time and start it, it might take some time but see if that does it

Two things to check:

Is the heatsink installed backwards? If it is the CPU may heat up too quickly and the motherboard goes into a safe mode and powers off.

Is the fan on the heatsink a two wire fan? If it is, then the motherboard will not get a signal that the fan is going, and newer motherboards will power off when they detect this.

Left a minor word out <grin>, I meant CPU HEATSINK.
However you CAN put a CPU in backwards, bend a few pins - it will fit! You'd be surprised what people can accomplish if they try hard enough. I saw a printer that the client had plugged the parallel cable in upside-down. I don't know how - but he got it in far enough to burn up the port in the printer!

My computer has suddenly developed a problem with powering up. I turn it on and maybe 3 times out of 5 it powers back down before getting into windows, most of the time before it reaches the "loading windows" screen. When this happens, I have to unplug the power and switch off the power switch on my psu, then plug it back in and switch it on. Most of the time, this works and the computer boots up completely, but other times I have to do the process several times. I know I probably need to get a new psu, but I'd hate to spend 60-80 bucks when it is a mobo problem, so currently I'm just tolerating it.

Make sure the FSB is set correctly. I think DURONS run slower.
