Here's my scenario. I originally had win98 installed on my machine by the manufacturer. when i shut down, my computer would turn off as normal. I had also figured out how to silence the modem withing win98.

I have now upgraded to winXP and want to know how do i set up my machine so that when i shutdown, it will automatically turn the machine off so that i don't have to sit there and wait until it is "safe for me to turn off my computer" and press the button to shut it off.

Also, where do i go to silence my modem. That sound is soo annoying and loud. According to the settings on the device manager, the modem is muted but yet i still hear it when i connect to the web.

if possible, please include step by step cuz i have gotten "solutions" to my problems, but can't seem to find how to get to them.

Your help is appreciated. Thank you

Do you know which motherboard is installed in your computer?

Try going into the BIOS (when the text screen appears when the computer is first turned on). Press F2 or DEL to get into BIOS settings.

Go to the Power Management (or equivalent menu), is there and ACPI option, if so, is it disabled?

You need to have a ATX power supply/motherboard for it to automactically switch off.

Best check the manual/contact your supplier to find out if your pc is atx.

If it atx then you might need to download the "Restarting Windows XP" update from microsoft see:

Also if you are using directCD or Easy CD Creator, uninstall them as they are known to cause problems with win xp shutdown, also ambient ham modems can cuase log off problems.

Try downloading the update anyway, it may solve your problem.

If it annoys Microsoft then it's worth doing, and doing well!!

WHAT the? if it is a at power supply like i am using in my old system with a mmx 223 pentium cpu and intel motherboard then it won't shut down automaticly? NOT,
see atx and at do not ACT the same, its the motherboard that tell windows if it needs to manuaily shut it down.

Yep I agree with Aces. If it shutdown in 98 then it is obviously capable of automatic poweroff.

It'll probably be in the power management options either in Windows or the BIOS, you might want to check on Intel website against your specific motherboard for any known issues.

It will only shut off ATX power supply yes... but since he has had 98 running and shutting down and turning off, he must have a ATX power supply.

I have the same problem.... i know a few people with XP. It seems half the people have a prob, half dont.

I have heard in a magazine that there is a auto turn off setting in the power management section of control panel - unfortunately i cant find it. I think its becuase i need to configure the power supply under this section to be able to get to the settings to turn it on. - and i aint had time to work out what my supply is to config it!!

I hope this helpfull to your plight. Please if you work it out, post it so i know

Regards

Dan

As to the modem, if you put the following special command into the options on the modem properties, it will silence it:

HI, I had the same problem with the modem being muted, but it still made a noise.

For some reason you have to do the following as well (or at least I did):

When you bring up the connect to box, instead of pressing "Dial" press "Properties".

Then make sure you are on the General tab and that the modem is highlighted in the "Connect Using:" box.

Then click on "Configure".

In here there is a check box that says "Enable Modem Speaker". If you uncheck this you will have no sound out of your modem.

I think thats what you are after.

Incidentally, whilst I think of it, I had this problem with 2 out of 3 PC's (2 PC's wouldn't turn off automatically, 1 did).

I fixed this by going into Power Options on the Control Panel and see if there is an APM tab at the top. If so, you should be able to enable Advance Power Management from here, which will mean your PC turns off automatically.

Thank you all,

I will try these suggestions this weekend and see which one works. I will post my outcomes as soon as i get results.

Thank You.

PS i DO have ATX.

Ok I have tried and tried and still no solution. I have RH Linux 7.2 installed as dual boot and when i shut down, the computer turns off, so i know my machine is capable. Heres my results on your suggestions.....

meastaugh1 - I found the ACPI in BIOS, but how do I "disable" it. The only possible options it gave me where str1/POS (default) and str3/(something I can't remember now).
- I don't understand or know how to do what they say in the article q314088 that you pointed me to.

destructa - I don't think the article Q307274 relates to my issue since i don't have the problems they mentioned.

NewPoster - ATM+0, i don't think it worked. I'm not sure because I didn't know where this is supposed to be enter. I placed it in modem setting under extra setting. So If that isn't the location, please let me kno.

bluegnu - How do I bring up the "connect to" box, I can't find it or figure out.
- I was able to enable APM, but it still didn't work.

And now, Windows XP can't load because it said that its either missing a file or its been corrupted:
\winnt\System32\Config\System
I then tried to do a "repair" but my cd won't boot up all of sudden. so Now I'm stuck.

If anyone can help, I would be greatful.

Thank You in advance

Have you tried the update anyway? When I did a clean install of XP it wouldn't restart (even before i installed any other software), but the update fixed it. So my pc now no-longer stays stuck on the log-off/shutdown screen. I think the update is a generic patch so should work regardless of the software installed. It can't hurt to try.

As I say it solved my problem. If it annoys Microsoft then it's worth doing, and doing well!!

Earlier you were asked what Motherboard you have. I didn't see the answer. It might help to know. For example, there is a known issue with the Asus P2B-F board. Other hardware have been reported to cause XP shutdown problems too (ie modem, video card, CD ROM, USB devices). Could you list them all? Thanks!

ok CoffeeBuzz and meastaugh1, sorry for the long hiatus for a response, but here are the specs of my machine:

Motherboard - Micro-Star Inc. MS 6309 2.0
BIOS - American Megatrends Inc. 62710 05/20/99
Processor - Pentium III
CD ROM(s) - LG CD-ROM CRD-8520B, LG CD-RW CED-8080B
Hard Drive(s) - Fujitsu MPF3204AT, WDC WD1200BB-18CAA
Modem - Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem(M)
NIC - SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI (SMC1211TX)
USB - VIA Rev 5 or later

Destructa: Maybe you are right I will download that update today and see if that fixes it.

EVERYONE: Also I will update my BIOS in hopes that it will fix the problem, only issue is that i'm not sure if it will affect the poweroff from the Linux shutdown that at this time is fully functional. Is this something to be scared of.

Thank You
