Also itll only power off when i push the power button! And if i press it when windows is running itll power straight off not shut down normally like Xp should do.

thanks

Just a shot in the dark, but you might check your BIOS settings to be some power management setting isn't getting "helpful". Also as far as using the power button, assuming this is an ATX supply, and it sounds like it is, holding the button pressed for 4.5 seconds or longer is the signal for emergency shutdown, meaning like NOW without any formalities. If this is what it is then it is by design. If it happens from only a short button press, you have a much different, and more "interesting" problem.

Hope this helps ...

It is an ATX power supply and shuts down from just a short press of the button.

There is usually a setting in the BIOS for the power button action, check there. XP also has a setting for this.

The answer has always been 42

where is the setting for this in XP?

I am compelled to believe that this is a virus (in boot sector)! There are several in fact that will effect your machine in this fashion (been through it several times before in the past). The more unlikey, but possible issue power management, like someone already alluded to or a hardware issue like the motherboard.
Great free virus program is AVG

Black screen (I have seen this on shutdown as well)

I just purchased and installed a new mother board and a cpu for my old computer. The mother board is a winfast 760GXK8MC and the CPU is a Sempron 3000 1.8 MHz. I installed Win Xp professional and everything works fine. The problem comes when I want to turn off the computer, if I click on turn off, the system shuts down and reboots again, it´s like I clicked on Restart. I played with the BIOS power management, the windows Power managenment but everything I try is useless. Any ideas of what is going on?

Thanks

Might be a bad power supply or a corrupt file in windows.

Usually there is a setting in the BIOS for the Soft Power Button functionality. Normally it is set on 5 second delay. You hold the button in and 5 seconds later it shuts down. If the OS is working and the power supply does not shut down, then you might have a bad power supply.

Another thing ive seen sometimes, in msconfig on certain ones as its not on mine that I can see (start, run, type msconfig) there is a option on there for like fast shutdown. If its turned off if yours has that option you will have to manually turn it off, if its on the comptuer should shutdown on its own. This may or may not be your problem but I just thought id post it just in case.
