Hi,

My computer has been booting fine for a year - now when I turn it on it all I get is blank black screen and nothing happens, no beep sound.

However if I unplug the computer and moniter and then plug it in again, the computer boots with a beep sound.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Thanks,

Gavin

So after you unplug it and plug it back in, it boots into Windows normally? Or does it post (give you the beep) but there's still no video on the screen?

Hi Shaner66,

it boots into Windows 98 fine after I unplug it, then plug it in and switch it on.

Hi Gavray

Sounds like a power supply problem, check the following and let us know what the story is.

1. When you boot the pc and you get a blank screen and no audio codes, have you checked to see if the power supply fan is turning or that any LED's are coming on for the computer.

2. You said that you also unpluged the VDU do you have to do this or is it receiving power. Normally a VDU that is pluged in and the the on/off button is switched to the on position but not receiving a signal from a booted pc will have a flashing yellow light beside power on/off.

3. If you have your equipment pluged into an extension cable or surge protector insure that they are not your culprits.

Good luck.

Hi,

finally got around to facing up to the problem -

<1. When you boot the pc and you get a blank screen and no <audio codes, have you checked to see if the power supply <fan is turning or that any LED's are coming on for the <computer.

the fan is turning and the LED just keeps on red but no beep or boot

<2. You said that you also unpluged the VDU do you have to <do this or is it receiving power. Normally a VDU that is <pluged in and the the on/off button is switched to the on <position but not receiving a signal from a booted pc will <have a flashing yellow light beside power on/off.

The VDU is not the problem as I don't have to unplug that

<3. If you have your equipment pluged into an extension <cable or surge protector insure that they are not your <culprits.

I changed the power point but still no joy.

is it the PSU do you think?

Gavin,

<is it the PSU do you think?

answer = YES and NO

before going out and buying a new one - try to get a hold of another one from a friend or so and try it...

now for the NO part - it could also be the 1.) Reset switch or 2.) power switch that are causing this behavio(u)r... if they are jammed or faulty they will hamper bootup...
