i am working on a dell dimension xps t500 and the system will not detect the cd writer as a cd writer, windows says its a standard cd rom drive and no burning software will recognize it. i swapped ou the drive with a newer mitsumi cd writer and found the same problem. i've tried adaptec easy cd creator 4, roxio easy cd creator 5.02 platinum, musicmatch, and one other strange burning program. none of them recognized either burner. i have updated all the drivers for the drive. the weird thing is that i installed nero 5.5 on the system and it detected the drive and i was able to burn a data cd. any suggustions as to how i can get windows and the other programs to recognize the writer?

The problem is with the CDRW drivers. If you have or have not loaded the drivers do the following:
1- in safe mode: remove all the burning progs and also remove all the drivers for CDROM and CDRW in Device Manage.
2- restart in normal mode and load the CDRW drivers from the manufacturer.
3- load burning software.

If the above does not resolve the problem the check the following:
1- BIOS recognises it correctly.
2- CDRW jumper is set correctly.
3- the IDE ribbon is not faulty.

If it still does not sort your pc out, please let us know what OS you are using?

Good luck
