My computer running winxp runs for different lengths of time and then just switches off no shutdown just cuts power if i try to restart it the switch on my computer will not work unless i unplug it from the mains and leave it for a while- after a few minutes every thing is back to normal and it will restart.

Sounds like a bad cpu fan or a failing power supply. Run it for a little bit, go into bios and check cpu temp.

Sounds a bit like a faulty Power Supply inside the machine. How long has it been doing this for? Perhaps you should get it looked at before it bursts into flames and costs a lot more to fix?

I agree it sounds like a dry joint, more likly in power supply. Also un plug it from the motherboard and plug it in again. This was common problem with 8086/88 and 20286. But diffent type of plugs. Also blow out dust from the case and power supply. Also you may consider reseating cards

Never give up never give in.

There are no short cuts to anything worth doing :)
