Computer Slows Down

I am working on a Gateway Computer that is about 1 1/2 Years old, it is a 2.9 Ghz with 512 Mb RAM and Windows XP. The problem I am having is that the computer will slow down every once in awhile it veries in which program you are on wheather it is network or local/internet or non internet. I have ran both Trend Micro and Symantec's online anti virus programs and neither found anything and I have ran spysweeper, Ewido & Spybot Search and Destroy and have removed the very few items that they have found. I just can't seem to put my finger on anyone thing that is causing the slowdown. ANY IDEAS?

Run msconfig & see what programs are starting on startup.

I can't see anything obvious. I think you may find that it is Norton that is causing the problem. Norton Internet security is well known for slowing systems down, as is most of the symantec stuff.
It may just be that the anti-vir prog is running a scheduled scan & slowing the system down. Try disabling all of the symantec software that you have & reboot. Don't connect to the internet without any security. Just try the system for a while & see if you have any further problems. If you do, then you should be able to rule out Norton, but I have a feeling that things will improve. If this is the case, get rid of Norton & install some better software. Maybe try:
AVG anti-virus free edition
Zonealarm firewall
 
You sure could use some more memory 512 is really very little with todays programs.
 
Memory is not the issue here. I have machines running happily with less than 512mb. I really think the problem will be Norton. Just put a search for 'norton problems' in to a google search & see the amount of results. Just tried it & got 13,300 results.
Not read them all, but you can guess the rest.
 
Another troubleshooting technique you could use; is when you notice the system slowing down, pop up task manager and look at the processes (or keep TM up until the problem occurs). Click on the CPU tab for processes and see what is using all the CPU during the slow down. If you notice a process that is using alot of CPU during the slow down. Do a google search on that process and I would be willing to bet it is some sort of malware, adware, spyware issue.

I see you use Spysweeper? If it's the latest version (5?), this may be part of the problem (apart from the afore-mentioned Norton products) - did you install it fresh or update to the latest version? It may be beneficial to do without it - uninstall it and test for a day or so - reinstalling it afresh once you've ruled it out will be fine - just take care where you surf in the meantime.
