Computer slow - 2 min startup, 1 min shutdown

Famy - don't you love them? My niece has kids and lots of stuff installed on 1.3 GHz Celeron computer. I tried F-Prot AV, defragmenting files and registries, ScanDisk. Here's the log, not in Safe Mode. Any ideas why startup still takes 2 minutes and shutdown 1 minute?

You appear to have nothing nasty as such. However.

Symantic is a resource hog. You might want to consider alternatives.

Spyware doctor im my experience slows startup quite a bit.

You have a lot of programs scheduled at startup that are not really necessary - such as kodak updater, winzippick, money express. The way I look at it - I am capable of deciding if and when I want updates and starting software when I need it - so I always kill stuff like that.

At the end of the day it's up to you - your choices are a faster startup & shut down or a PC that runs lots of services you may or may not need.

Besides what stduc mentioned, you can do all of these:
If you have anything in the tasktray next to the clock that is not necessary: security apps may be necessary there, I would disable those items from the msconfig-startup options, and/or from the "Startup" folder under your Start Menu - Programs/All Programs.

Make sure the visual settings are as low/slim as possible. Given that the system is a little slow with the Celeron 1.3, this will help. The lower the resources available, the more this will help. You can change this in a few ways:
1. Disable any screensavers
2. Change the resolution and color scheme to lower - if not already low.
3. Right-Click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", "Advanced" tab, Performance - either custom select/deselect items, or just choose "for best performance".
4. You can also check the virtual memory in the same as last location. Generally, it's best to have at least twice what the system memory (RAM) installed. So, if the computer has 256 megabytes of RAM, I'd set it to at least 512 min, and 1024 max.
5. Make sure that the desktop isn't COVERED in files and shortcuts, especially files. Anything on the desktop can slow down performance some. Given that this system has a 1.3 ghz Celeron, I'd especially suggest that getting as much off the desktop as possible.
6. Alternative method for defragging a hard drive: I read this in a tech magazine, and it seems to make a little difference. Ever so often, I will do what they called a "power defragment". That is, I disable the virual memory, restart the computer as requested by Windows, THEN do a defrag. Once complete, re-enable the virtual memory. This way, the Windows can access the hard drive space normally allocated to virtual memory, and defrag that as well as the rest of the hard drive.
7. On the desktop, if it has no dedicated graphics card, I would also suggest taking any background pictures off. Especially, if they are using a fairly detailed picture for the background, this can be a resource hog (comparatively especially for older/slower machines).
8. If they have anything less than 512 megabytes of RAM, I'd suggest upgrading that to at least 512 or whatever the maximum is for their motherboard or computer. Generally, it's pretty cheap to get 256 or 512 Megabytes of RAM nowadays, especially if you find it somewhere like eBay - used.
9. It wouldn't be a bad idea to suggest investing in a dedicated graphics card as apposed to onboard graphics, if they do not already have one. A 64 megabyte (even used) video card would make loads of difference, especially for this particular kind of setup. It may not particularly help the startup speed, but it would help in running most applications, at least a little, in a Windows XP environment, particularly anything with much visuals. Again, you may can find a cheap used one on eBay or your local paper.

As far as replacing Norton, you could check out some of the free antivirus apps. I personally like Grisoft AVG Antivirus best. Some like Avast antivirus best, and there are a couple others. AVG has a free version, and a paid version. I've been using the free version for at least 2 years now, if I remember correctly, and have installed it on many other computers. Frankly, after going from Norton to AVG (I always used Norton, prior), Symantec would have to really do something different to get me to go back. AVG doesn't slow down your computer to a crawl like Norton and McAfee tend to.
