computer shuts down when loading windows on cold boot with Phenom 9950be processor. This only occurs when I first start the computer in the morning... after it is running it runs with no issues at all

I am using:
an asus crosshair MB with the latest Bios flash of Version 1207
8 gig of OCZ reaper ram
PS is 1000 watts (psu does not make a difference...swapped them)
I have kicked up the voltage on the processor and I am not overclocked

I will be buying a new MB that natively supports the phenom
but I am curious if anyone has a fix for that issue

This may sound strange, but try the following:

in the BIOS set the RAM speed manually, and underclock it to 667mhz...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

in the boot process it is a random thing it can go from right after the bios posts screens to after 5 to 10 minutes after boot....found it is not an uncommon issue and lots of forums talk about it with no solutions
the Asus Crosshair is one of the more configurable boards out there and but ram is not so easily set to slow it down
right now I think the issue may end up having a new bios revision to fix the issue.

This is the new Motherboard I am looking at...let me know what you think.

looks like a nice board, but before you go out and spend the money for a new board, try testing the memory for errors.

it may also be a harddisk, cables, or could also be a bad psu.
if you have known working compatible parts, swap them out 1 at a time to see what happens. you can test the psu with an digital multimeter.

done all that lol I did find out it is an issue with the AMD quad core CPU's. I am more and more suspecting a bios issue. the way power flows through the MB may be an issue... I may just flash the bios to the Dual core settings (older Bios) then just use the 6400 dual core on that board and use the quad on the new board

Well, Here is an update. in the bios the ram is set at 2.1 volts and when you look at the voltage in the bios statitics page it reads 1.88 as it does when I run Everest or Speedfan and look at voltages... AL Booster reads the voltage at 2.1.... weird

so what I did was reduce down to 4 gig (2X2gig) this reduced the load on the motherboard over all

I do have Asus tech support looking into the issue

I will post more as it comes up

Motherboard needs to be AM2+....note* the + (plus) to be phenom capable. like this one:

thanks paparazi ...
the Crosshair with Bios version 1207 can only run the phenom AM2+ the 1207 bios does not allow dual core and you have to revert back to an earlier bios to run a dual core CPU. though an earlier bios version allows the crosshair to run CPU voltages at 140watt but the 1207 only allows the 125 watt CPU to run (its what I have)
the CPU is on the CPU chart for the motherboard

thanks

AM2+ was a designation given to Phenom capable motherboards who's power circuitry was capable of handling the extra power needed for these CPU's. A bios upgrade does not make a boards circuitry more capable, that said the board you have is high end and is likely equipt with better power circuitry anyway.
Phenom is 'QUAD or TRIPLE' core not dual as you keep writing.
All AM2 boards are Dual core capable, AM2+ are Dual core AND Phenom (Quad/Triple)
And when talking you mix voltage up with wattage....they are both different.
The problem with a lot of boards 'even some that proclaim that they are AM2+' is that they cannot supply the higher wattage required by a Phenom (that is stabley and consistantly) this is well documented on several of the review forums such as Toms Hardware and Anandtech.

ok the difference is I have a 6400 cpu sitting on the shelf and that was the dual core
I have the new 9550be that is in the computer and that is the quad core.

with bios 1207 only phenom processors will run on that bios

the wattages that are the 140 watt version of the phenom processor will not run on my board

the 125 watt phenom type processors are on the board computability chart for the MB and list the appropriate bios flash for the type cpu that are using phenoms list 1207

all others are earlier bios's

sucks the way asus did it its easier just to get a new board lol

thanks for the input so far
