I have a computer connected to the main server from another location through a router. The computers at this site can map to the servers by going to map network drive and doing \\servername\sharefolder. However you cannot see the folding under the domain name in Network Neighborhood. Nothing appears. That is ok but now I want to connect them to another server at another location. And now the computers can ping the second server but cannot see it or map any network drives to this server. When I ping the server name Unknow host is the response. When we try to map to the \\servername I get computer or sharename could not be found...

The computers all have static IP Addresses.

I am really at a stand still here. I have checked and rechecked all the settings. I did an ipconfig /all to make sure that the ip address are correct.

How are you doing name resolution? DNS, WINS, hosts file?
Can you ping the server you are trying to map to by ip address?

Could also be a master browser issue. Check out FAQ?: faq96-3728

I use WINS.
I can ping the IP address.

If you can ping the IP address, but not the manchine by name, then it sounds like you need to ensure that the machine the other side of the router is set to register it's connection in DNS / WINS.

also I can map the drive using \\ip address\share

What do I need to check to see if the computer is set to register it's connection to DNS /WINS?

On the tcp/ip properties, dns tab or wins tab there should be an option to register the connection addresses with dns/wins.

I think I should have mentioned that the computer on the other side is a win 98 os. I see that on 2000 but I don't on win98.
