Ok I have major problems with my computer.
First of all it is in a network of a few computers. My computer is configured as 192.168.0.1 and shares the internet out to the rest of the network through XP ICS.
Now... For some god forsaken reason no-one could ping me by my computer name, only by the ip-address, no matter what I did. None of my shares were visible to anyone on the network including myself. The "My Network Places" window would just time-out. I couldn't work out what was wrong with it. The problem just occured out of the blue.
I've got an onboard network card - Broadcom chipset on MSI KT4Ultra - 6590, nothing special but it does the trick. So I tried removing the network card drivers and adding them again but to no avail. Then I tried the TCP-IP Repair function and that didn't seem to work. Then I found a thread kind of similar to the problem I was having so I thought what the hell i'd try it and downloaded the WinsockFix program (latest version) and it did it's thing, seemed to work but still no success...
Now comes the bad part. I opened Device Manager and unhid all hidden devices and attempted to stop the items that I thought were relevant out of the Non-Plug and Play Drivers to see if there was some, higher level way to reset the connection as such, I changed a couple to disable and bam.. The network didn't work. I restarted, changed the options back but I still have an exclamation next to the network adapter as though it's not there and not working, and also a few exclamation marks next to some of the Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
Naive but hopeful, I remembered a little trick from Windows 98, if ever you had any MAJOR problems with Devices, IRQ and such, open up device manager, and remove absolutely EVERYTHING. It would take a long time to reload the drivers for every device and also the motherboard functions Etc but it always worked for me.
Soooo.. I tried this with the Non-Plug And Play Drivers section and uninstalled the exclamation marked "drivers", including "TCP/IP Protocol Adapter". Thinking that this may fix it I restarted and now they're gone completely, I can't add new hardware as they won't automatically detect, and I couldn't find anywhere to manually add a device of this nature.
So i'm calling out in desperation for someone with any ideas. Anything would be helpful... Sorry the information is all over the place but please if you need more information do not hesitate to ask. I know the ultimate answer is format but there HAS to be some way around it. I've tried to use the repair Windows XP function hoping that that would fix it but it hasn't.
If this helps, Ipconfig returns the following:
Windows Ip Configuration
An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specified.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
Additional information: Unable to query host name.
Thanks
