Computer hangs exiting bios and on reboot.

This is a strange one that I have never seen before. I installed redhat on an old computer and found that when I make changes to the bios and save and exit the com0puter does not reboot properly.

It also does the same when I reboot from within redhat.

I have tried a different motherboard and the same stuff happens. I am using a PCI graphics adapter and I am wondering if this has anything to do with it?

If anyone has seen a similar problem and been able to fix it please let me know.

I haver redhat on other machines that do not exhibit this problem but as the problem occurs when exiting bios it leads me to believe it must be a hardware issue of some kind.

If I use the reset switch there is no problem!

Have you checked to see if there is a new version of the bios. This may be a known issue with the bios version you're running and most likely has nothing to do with the OS you are running.

In my limited experience, 80-90% of all problems brought to my attention can be attributed to PEBCAK...the other 10-20% can be attributed to MS!

Which version of RedHat did you install? Did RedHat detect and install your PCI graphics adapter drivers automatically during the installation process or did you manually force install the drivers after the RedHat installation?
Check out RedHat's site for downloading updated systemboard drivers. You might also find updated PCI graphics adapter drivers compatible with your specific graphics card on their site.
However, updating the BIOS is the first thing I would do and then take it from there on.

Thanks for your replies. I have already checked on the bios situation but the newest version is only a beta.

As far as the driver when setting up X in REdhat is concerned I did have to set the driver to VESA in the XFree86-4.conf from the command line and then update the system and then set it to the ATI driver. - There are known problems with X set-up with Radeons!!! But as far as the display is concerned it's fine.

I think that the lack of reboot after saving bios changes means there is something relating to hardware. I wondered if it might be to do with the graphics card because I used to have this set up as a win machine and it was fine.

The only difference was then I was using an AGP graphics card!

Also not sure this would make any difference but I am thinking it might be an idea to try the graphics card in the uppermost PCI slot - see if that makes any difference.

I had a major attempt to track done the problem causing this strange reboot issue.

I have disconnected all the drives one by one to see it they had any affect whatsoever.

I tried the system with no drives attached. Ctrl + Alt + del at the bios page did not restart the machine. I know the mother board is good (the same behaviour occured on another model board)

SO I conclude it's either the related to the processor the Power-supply or the Graphics card.

It's a real annoyance because apart from that the system is up and running without any problems at all!

Once again if anyone has any ideas let me know!
