I wrote about this problem more than a year ago and i still don't have it fixed...

I bought a computer it's a pentium III and i use win98 which was installed by the company that i bought it from (the comp.).

When i formatted the HD and tryed to install win 98 whis happened:

Whe it resets the comp. during setup and says something like: starting windows for the first time...
It just hangs...

I tried many many MANY things but no luck...

This is my (i hope temporary solution).
When it restarts i hit f8 and choose the option where you can choose what to load. And the first option is to load system registry. I choose no. And in installs fine and works fine but i have to do this procedure every time i reset my copmuter. This is not a serious problem and like i said i've been doing it for more than a year but still... it really bothers me and i would really like to fix this...

Perhaps you could try zero filling your hard disk. If you go to the manufacturers web site (of your hard disk) they may offer you a utility for download that totally wipes your hard disk by writing zeros to every sector on the hard disk. This is the equivilent of the low level format from days gone by. This will clear sections that a normal format does not. Depending on your hard disk size, it may take hours to do (i left mine overnight).

Incidentally, you did an unconditional format on your hard disk originally? With the /u parameter? Em.. You could also try "fdisk /mbr" at the command prompt (from a boot disk) to put in a microsoft standard master boot record. There's not much more you can do to a hard disk software wise. You're also using a legitimate copy of Windows, right?

I'm thinking it's a hardware driver problem,,,,, Like a NIC driver,,,,,,, or Sound CArd.

WHAT DOES THE BOOTLOG.txt say ???????

POST MORE INFO PLEASE............

The way you can check to see if it's a device is to remove all devices (except the ones needed)...i.e. video. First remove them physically, then go into Safe Mode and remove them from Device Manager. After everything is removed, install each device (one at a time). Then you can isolate the device that's giving you the problem.

Hope this helps,

Ladesign:

Here is the hot-tip for doing what you suggested, and it's a time saver compared to your way:

> With Windows running, BEFORE you shutdown, you go into DEVICE MANAGER, and remove the device .......( I suggest ONE at a time) from the list.
Then, you turn off the computer and remove that device.
( This means that you do NOT have to boot up and go into safe-mode, remove the GHOST of the device, and then reboot again into Windows to test).
You just have to remove and boot into Windows.
NOW...... the key is (since you suggest physically removing devices) you MUST have your drivers around,,,,,,, sometimes you will need drivers to reinstall.
*** This is a great time, a good opportunity, to UPDATE your drivers......... so have the new drivers handy.
