I have a gigabyte motherboard and duron 1300 chip. I installed the mobo and switched on. The screen appears then it just switches off. I removed the heatsink, turned it around and fixed in place again.

This time it stayed on for longer and then stopped. When I installed the heatsink the first time I got all that compound stuff on my finger :O(

Could this be the problem as the chip gets very hot. If so, where can I get some more compound.

cheers,

jono

You cannot just arbitrarily change a heatsink's orientation on the CPU.
It has to be installed in the correct position, and there's only one of those.
If it's installed incorrectly, then the CPU will definitely overheat and possibly get damaged.

You can order thermal compound online(Recommend Arctic Silver 3).
If you want some immediately, then try either Radio Shack or a local computer shop/outlet.
Clean the old thermal compound off the heatsink and the CPU with high purity alcohol, apply only a very thin layer to both the heatsink and the CPU die, and be careful not to get any on any areas of the CPU other than the die.

AMD's do not do well without properly installed heatsinks. You may have damaged your CPU as ski said. When you get the heat sink compound and clean the old off MAKE SURE you get the sink on the right way!

You get just one chance with socket A CPU's, fit the heatsink the wrong way around, even for just 10 seconds and I am afraid you have killed your Duron.
If that wasn't punishment enough for the poor thing, you finnished it off by fitting it without proper thermal compound, may it R.I.P.
An expensive mistake that you only make once.

Thanks guys. I have just bought another duron :O(
Before I fit it, how do you know which way is the correct way to install the heatsink.

I have read that the notch you put the screw drive in should face the PSU?

Is this correct?

I don't want to burn another chip.

If you have a current gigabyte MB (I'm guessing on the MB cause you don't give the model #) they come with a CPU Clock switch the sets the speed of the CPU from 100MHz to 133MHz. Duron chips run at 100MHz. by default they are set at 133MHz. There could be a possibility that it is set at 133MHz, if so then the process you explain happens because the Duron won't run on 133MHz on these particular MB. Check the MB Manual as to the location of this switch and settings. Once you have corrected the settings clear the CMOS and fire up you PC.

yes, your are correct. This was my initial problem. I had to change the jumper from 133 to 100 in order to get a display. I just need to study the HSF and the processor and find out which is the correct way. I didn't realise it was an issue. I just placed the HSF on to the processor before without giving any thought as to which way around it was.
