When i run a IP scanner in our SBS domain it brings up some incorrect results. Some IP's show the names of old computers no longer belonging to our domain while the actual IP belongs to a new computer.
Is this DNS issues or what is happening as this is very strange. I have tried several scanners but they give similar results. Never seen this before.

Sounds like your DNS needs to be cleaned up.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Your scanner has an option to "resolve host names" and it asks the local DNS for resolution of each IP that it finds in a scan. If you DNS is out of date, you'll get old data.

How do i clean up DNS on SBS?

What i also found is that it shows a computername (xxxpc) and netbios name (yyypc)with completely wrong domain username at times.

To clean up DNS, you just need to go into the DNS Admin console and delete A records that are no longer correct. Stick to deleting entries related to workstations. It sounds like you are also looking at the WINS Admin, where NetBios names are displayed. You shouldn't have to delete entries in there, since it's all dynamic: over time, it will correct itself.

In the WINS console, you will see entries for both users and computers if the Messenger service is running on your workstations. Sometimes that's a good way to figure out who is using a particular workstation.

I had a look at WINS and DNS but dont find any invalid names there. I still have some computers that is showing up in network/IP scanners with totally incorrect computer names. If i check computers names etc on the particular pc everything shows correctly configured.Maybe i must mention that colleague installed Hamachi on our SBS network.
