I downloaded a movie from the internet and when I try to Import that to Adobe Premiere 6.5 it says "Unable to open that file. Files uses an unsupported compression format. The type of file the movie is, is DivX.avi. Does anybody know what I have to do or what Codec I can get?

Premiere cannot read DivX files, which are very highly compressed and not in an editable format.

You could try converting the file to DV AVI using Virtual Dub (free - Google for it).

I use Canopus ProCoder (which is getting rather long in the tooth now and due an update), not VirtualDub, so cannot comment. But lots of people seem to be very happy with VirtualDub, and it's free, so it would seem worth giving it a try in your case before spending money on something like Sorenson Squeeze.
