I want to enable compression on a T1 circuit between 2 routers - encap hdlc. Not sure whether to use stacker or predictor. Which one is usually used and where can I find the correct commands?

Predictor only supports PPP and LAPB

Use stacker, command is:

!
interface s0
encap hdlc
compress stac
!

Are there any kinds of data that this type of compression technique would not work well with? What are the disadvantages of using compression?

I read that the Cisco 2600 router uses Data Compression AIM(Advanced Integration Module slot) which supports 8Mbps of compressed data throughput without imposing additional traffic latency. So hardware may be needed?

It depends on your requirement on the performance and your budgets. You can test the performance without the AIM first to see if you're satisfied.
