Compression not working

We are running Backup Exec version 8, for Netware. We have not been able to get compression to work. When we go the the job manager to configure the compression, it gives the choices of: hardware, software, or none. It was originally set to hardware by default. We tried changing it to software, and that also gave no compression, the ratio was 1:1. The server is a Compaq proliant with a Compaq DAT tape drive. It takes DDS4 20/40 GB DAT tapes.
We are wondering if it's possible to get compression to work with this drive.
