Compressing Illustrator files 1

I have both pdf and illustrator ai files which I can not attach and send via email as they are too big. Could someone please tell me how to reduce or compress these files.
I think I should have saved my originals as jpegs but that save option is no longer available.

...what is the end use of the pdf's and ai files?
...for commercial print output?
...you mention files (plural) are we talking three, four or several dozen?

...jpeg can be found in the export dialog...

...PDF compression of bitmaps and so forth is found in the save as PDF dialog...

...smaller Ai files can be created by turning off PDF compatibility and linking images as opposed to embedding them...

You might try using an ftp site between you and the person you are sending it too. Check with your admin if you have an ftp site.
