Compressing backup

I have backup exec 9.0 on a file server. I am using 20/40 travan tapes to backup our data. We are now over the 20GB uncompressed data and I have setup the job to use the software to compress the data "Hardware if available otherwise software" option. However it isn't compressing the data. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong???

Also, the server seems to run out of memory or something and reboots itself after running the nightly backup. Any thoughts on that issue would be appreciated!
