I am running BE 8.6, and I just purchase a some tape. 12G/24G compress. Right now, when my backup reaches 14 Gig, it is asking for another media. Is there any way to fix this error
any help is greatly appreciate.
KimVong, this is not an error. The 12/24 refers to the native/compressed capacity of the tape.
The 24GB compressed capacity assumes 2:1 compressibility of the data. While this is easily achievable with ascii files, binary files (programs/dll's etc) will rarely compress very much, if at all.
Looking through my own backup logs, I tend to get about 1.4:1 compression, so a 12GB tape would store about 17GB of data compressed.
You should be able to squeeze a bit more onto the tape if you don't store the catalogue on the media, but this will cause restores to take longer as the media would need to be recatalogued.
Pih7 is right...the compression is rated on compressing a text file. If you getting over 12 gb then the compression is working. If your backing up datbase file or imagess they are already compressed and passed off to the tape device. Backup Exec doesnt perform the compression..the tape device does, unless you choose software compression. You may gain or loose a little when using software compresssion. Make sure you have the latest firmware and latest tape drivers installed.
