compress an entire directory

is there a utility or way to compress an entire directory?

* do you have emulator? do you want it backedup using Ms win? try winzip it after mapping up with a drive - the directory you want to back up.

* if file only - try compress for unix

it is a unix AIX directory with many files totaling 4 gig. I need to compress it and do not want to do it one file at a time.

Here is a couple of things you might try. Create a new jfs with LZ compression turned on and move the files there or download gzip and use it to compress and package the files into one. You can download gzip from:
