When I add a module to PHP that requires a recompilation of PHP to install, I give all the previous configuration options and the new one to the configure script.
In fact, to make my life easier, I have created a script which calls configuration_command that invokes the configure script with all my configuration options. I can install a new library into PHP by just editing my script and re-running it.
The script also tees the output of the configuration script to a file so I can examine it for errors at my leisure.
