I have a coworker who had an interview with another company. He brought back their salary offer to my boss and received a raise to match that offer. Now, I hear the coworker bragging that it was only a bluff, he was never offered the other job. I am wondering how competitive salary offers have worked for other people. Should my boss have requested something in writing to verify he had the offer? Is it "fair" to bluff like my coworker did? I am curious how other situations of competitive offers have worked for folks.

Just a word of warning - I have heard few, maybe 3 in over 20-30 years that friends of mine has worked here have actually kept there jobs when they have tried something like that. IMHO, you really should be willing to lose the job that you have to try this route.

So, it sounds like this isn't the way it usually works. I had never watched/seen/done a competitive offer for more money. Until it happened in the cube next door. Kind of blew my mind that my boss wouldn't ask for something in writing to verify the guy had the offer.

I guess it depends on the company... but I wouldn't bet my job security on it - if you know what I mean;-)

Go with your gut, but I would just try to remain a bit conservative, especially since someone else just did this - if you went in and asked the same way as he did now... that could look suspicious and he might ask you for proof! BeckahC

Also sounds like you really gotta be worth something to them.

If the can easily replace you, especially with someone cheaper... they probably will just congratulate you on your new endeavor.

Accepting counter offers is not often a good idea. The mere act of interviewing somewhere else is sending a message to your employer that you're unhappy. Even if they counter, they may only do it to keep you around long enough to find a replacement who'd be happy to be there.

Tread with care.

oh, I don't intend to do a competitive salary offer like that fellow did. If I go to all the trouble of interviewing and finding another job, I would move to the other job. Loathing the job hunt is what is keeping me here! :)

"The mere act of interviewing somewhere else is sending a message to your employer that you're unhappy. "

I know of managers that promote yearly or twice yearly interviews. It keeps your resume up-to-date, hones your interviewing skills, keeps you aware of your market worth, and (in the case that you actually enjoy your current job) it is always nice to reject an offer.

Yes, I've heard of places that do that too. The other type of office is more common though. According to some items I've read on job sites, up to 80% of people who stayed at a company due to counteroffers were gone within 2 years anyway. It works for some people but it's always good to be very careful about it and think it through.
