Compatible Printer list for Remote desktop

Does anyone know of a list of compatible printers that will work over remote desktop connections?

we've contacted HP and they sya they do not support this at all and we have to test every printer first to see if it will work.
 
not an expert on this, but from my experience....

As long as the printer is compatible with the hardware on both ends of your connection, you should be fine. Microsoft TechNet does have a long list of devices with known hardware compatibility. The very most important thing though is that the Printer drivers installed on both machines must be identical. Many RDP printing issues for our clients have have been resolved by reinstalling printer drivers on both machines, ensuring that the same driver is installed on both sides of the connection.

Also, once the printer driver is installed on the host server, the actual Printer (displayed in the Printers and Faxes configuration) may be deleted or removed. The print driver remains behind. After all, the server or machine you are connecting to via RDP does not have a physical connection to the printer, and the actual installed printer is not needed.
 
thanks for the reply, but we have tried what you say and you are right and this is the mehtod to get it working however whether it works or not depends on the printer. some work, some dont. trouble is we need to recommend to our customers a particular current model of printer that works thats a reasonable price (about £150) as the only ones we know work are now discountinued.

I'm a little confused, what do you mean by "some work, some don't"?

Unless there's a configuration issue, just about any printer should work if you can install the same driver on the server and on the client PC. Host-based printing systems might give you some problems but I can't be certain because I avoid them if at all possible.

If your problem is that locally-attached printers don't show up in your RDP sessions, you probably just need to follow these instructions:

I do this because I use a variety of HP printers at the nine offices that I support. Some connect via LPT ports but the majority connect via TCP/IP. TCP/IP ports are ignored by the RDP redirection process until you make the registry modification on the client PC.

If it helps, I use: LaserJet 1100, 1200, 1300, 2100, 2200, 2430, and probably some others that I don't recall at the moment.
 
You don't need to install the printer on the TS box. Just the driver itself. The best way is to go into PRINTERS, then click FILE>SERVER PROPERTIES, and go to the DRIVERS tab and install them there.

As PPettit mentioned by referencing the KB article, if the printer attached the workstation says DOT4 for the port, it "ain't gonna work". You can work to make it say USB, but for the most part, multifunction devices shouldn't be attempted.
