One of our coworkers has a personal copy of Office 2003, the rest of us have Office 2000. If the coworker produces a document in Word, they others can't open it. Is there a way to save in Word 2003 that is backwards compatible with 2000?
Thanks,
Jill

You should be able to do this just fine. I'm by no means a Word expert, but I've done this many times (2003 at home, 2000 at the fire house). Is there any error messages given? Are there any other files unable to be opened? What about other Office applications?

File formats are the same so the only reason I can see that there could be a problem is if a feature available in one version is used that is not available in the previous version. Could that be an issue?

What happens if someone creates a doc on 2000, and that user with 2003 works on it and then saves it - can others open that.

Does this happen for all docs created by this user, and if so what happens they create a basic file with just a couple of words in it, ie "This is a test".

Check above situation after following settings on Word 2003 machine:
Goto Tools-->Options
Goto Compatibility Tab.
Select 'Microsoft Word 2000' in dropdown box for 'Recommended options for:'
Say 'OK'.
Now every document created on the word 2003 will be compatible to word 2000.

Thanks pgorule- that was exactly the sort of thing I was hoping someone would tell me about.
Ken- it is possible that the translation feature differs in 2000 and 2003 versions to the point that it causes incompatibility. The Some documents need to be translated into Spanish, and the person who owns Office 2003 can't get the feature to work right in Office 2000, but if she does something in 2003, no one else can open it. I'll try pgorule's suggestion and see if they can open translations then.
