Compare two Files - KSH Script !!!

Hello together,
perhaps can anybody help me. How can i compare the time stamp of two files. One File is local and the other one is remote. I want query it with the secure shell.

e.g.
if [ file1 -nt `ssh ....` ]
.
.
.
fi
