I haven't done much with DB2, but I put a FAQ in the PostgreSQL section, detailing most of the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL (faq699-1751). Most of those differences will also apply to DB2, with a few additions, I'm sure. In other words, DB2 is more like PostgreSQL than it is like MySQL. -------------------------------------------

ryacamor is very correct.
The other thing about DB2 and other propriety commercial apps is that they come with application layers - data mining, SOAP etc.
Also depends what you want to use the db for - if you are building a transactional system better not go the OSS route.

Why not go OSS with Transactions,
Why not go OSS with Transactions,
Transactions and all the other data integrity stuff is very well tested in PostgreSQL, which is also open source. (BTW transactions are only the MINIMALLY important aspects of data integrity--there is much more!) -------------------------------------------

I meant commercially tested and supported - Postgres and MySQL are okay for Web-sites - but not yet for back-end transactional stuff.
They may be ready technically - but there is still reluctance from support level etc not yet the sophistication necessary.
This is a pity and, IMO, will change - pretty expensive using the features-busy Oracle,IBM, SQL Server.
But the business support to Open Source databases are not there yet.
