Compare EMC gatekeeper device with SVC on IBM shark?

Trying to understand terminology between EMC Symmetrix and IBM shark storage arrays. Since EMC maintains gatekeeper to issue symcli commands to its array, so is there any similar terminology in IBM shark storage array?

IBM shark uses SAN volume controller which is SVC to maintain / issue commands. But is there any database does it maintains like EMC does on host side?
