i have a report that gets its information from a query. i would like to know how to compare the dates in the db to todays date.So i can display the items that are overdue.

Depends on how you want to do this but you can use something like:
=IIf([DateField]<Date())
You can use conditional formatting in reports and forms.

Sorry, forgot to complete the IIf()
=IIf([DateField]<Date(), "Some Value", "Other Value")
