Compaq V75 Monitor USB ports

Hi
my monitor a compaq V75 (which i know is quite old) has a usb port on it however when i go to plug a peripheral into it, it is not recognised, is there any way i can get these ports to work?

sorry i forgot to add i am working on windows 98SE

These ports are just extentions, you need to plug an A-B USB cable in (from PC to monitor base) in order for the ports to work , it won't work through the VGA lead lol
