Are the DVD roms drives on these laptops region coded ?

If so is it the drive itself of the software used to run it ?

I know it can be configured to whichever region you want to use, but it will only allow me to change this 3 times.

Compaq Presario 600 mhz...307 XL is the model number.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Unfortunately, I don't have a direct answer to your question, but you can try calling Compaq directly: 1800OKCOMPAQ

Good Luck

I would venture to guess that YES the drive is region coded in the firmware. Most later DVD drives are, along with the DVD software and in particular Windows 98/ME/2000. I do know that Compaq's commercial portables code the region in the drive firmware.

Their initial releases into the DVD arena used DVDExpress which did not support this at the time and the code was saved in the registry and I think in one of the boot files, like command.com or io.sys. You would need to find and delete the registry setting and then sys the boot partition to reset the region code. Doug
