Compaq Presario 5000

I need help to try and find out what is wrong with this machine. It goes through POST and then when it should "boot" a screen which looks like a splash screen appears. It is grew in color (background) with small diagonal color squares on it.

I thought maybe it was affected by a virus, but that would be a MBR virus and it probably wouldn't have gotten this far if it was.

The specs are as follows:
P3
256 sdram
10 gig HD Western Digital
Original MB

I have tried within 6 months 3 different times using the online "speak to a compaq tech" and they have not been able to figure it out.

Have you tried booting it in safe mode F8. It may be a Display driver issue.

nope just open new 200 gig and place it in there. tried me restore cd and 2k pro. when it should show me screen that says booting from cd "hit any key" I get grey splach screen.

I would try to boot from a boot disk, or an XP disk. IF not unplug everything from the board except the video card. If it is onboard video try another card. May resetting the bios would help.

OK, this is what i did. I switched HD with another machine and created 4 disk boot disk from 2k pro. It ran all 4 disks and then when it should of started the cd the screen goes blank/balck. The monitor led light stays green.

Is the jumper correct on the CD?

Yes it has new dvd-rom it can now boot from cd, i can see "setup is loading files" on bottom grey taskbar on 2k pro screen. It stops at "setup is starting windows 2000 files" and screen goes black but led light is still on of monitor.
