We are looking for a new laptop that can accept a hard drive from the previous machine, a Compaq Presario 1700. We have checked online for replacement laptops, but it has shown to be difficult trying to find the right part/replacement. Can anyone offer a laptop that would work, a way to find out by looking at the drive, or any links that could assist us? Thanks...

Most laptops use a 9.5mm high drive, all other sizes and connectors are standard (as far as I know). If the OS CD is bootable then it should be easy to retain your data after a 'repair' installation has been made.

Some laptops have an option to fit a second hard drive (usually instead of an optical/floppy drive, others can use a second hard disk in the docking station.

A lot of Dells have both these facilities.

Andy.
