If you are using this type of NIC card with driver v3.63 and are experiencing backup problems, you may want to consider download and installing the latest drivers.

There is a known problem backing up with the Compaq Gigabit NIC cards with the Compaq driver v3.63.

The latest version is 6.2.33. If you are also using NIC teaming, then you need to update this software to the latest version as well.

You can find the links to these patches at:

Do you know for sure that all problems are solved with this new drivers?

I know that there has been enough people in this forum that had the problem in the past with this configuration.

I also know people that has upgraded the driver and reported that backup problems were resolved.

I also know that the driver version jumped from V3.6 to 6.2.

Does this mean it is a guareentee that this will solve all problems? Of course not. However, I believe that there has been enough reports about driver V3.63 issues that warrants that people look into upgrading the driver.

I think this is your problem:

Legato Networker uses the following order for selecting with tapes to write on.
1. Any unused (newly labels) tapes that is in the juke box
2. Any tape that is appendable in the juke box
3. Any tape that is appendable that is NOT in the juke box
(The system would then wait on a mount)
4. The oldest tape in recycle status, in the juke box or not.
(If not in the Juke box the system would wait forever on a mount)

I was having a whale of a problem with one of my sites after upgrading to Win2K server and migrating our domain to AD. The problem specifically was that my Exchange server (with Compaq NC6136) would never communicate with the Legato server for scheduled backups. I tried every configuration possible with no luck. Legato didn't have a clue until I said I would not be rolling out their software to my other 30 sites. They magically provided me with an "unsupported" registry fix that they claim was given to them by Compaq. Whether it was or not, it did the trick. It was simply changing one number from 2 or 3, to 0. I'm sure the new Compaq driver version addresses this same problem, but it took me almost a month to resolve the issue. I'm running 6.1.2 and the 3.1 Exchange module. So far, I think 6.1.2 has been the most reliable.

Actually 6.1.3 should be the most reliable... take a look at the bug fix notes to see what has been patched up.

I've seen the problem happening when using the gigabit nic, but when we use the 100 Mbit nic, no problem... that's how we narrowed it down to a NIC issue.

The registry hack was at the suggestion on Compaq. The hack worked for some customers but not for all. Other workarouonds was to downgrade the driver, go from the Compaq driver to the Intel driver...

The NIC problem looks like a Legato problem, but it really isn't. It is really the fault of the nic driver.

I know that the latest driver does resolve the problem for the people that I know that installed it. I haven't heard about any failures from upgrading to the latest driver version.

I'll definitely upgrade the driver. Although the registry fix really doesn't affect any other aspect of the system, I'd rather update the driver - just sits a little easier in my mind. I wasn't having problems with any 10/100 NICs either, only gigabit. I may go ahead and upgrade to 6.1.3 and give it a whirl too. The only problem I have now is that one of my virtual SQL nodes is not updating in the index when I go in to restore - only if I manually back up the databases will it reflect the most current. The index directory itself is being updated with the current dates though. Do you know if 6.1.3 addresses this issue?

Thanks.

Sorry, but I wasn't too clear about the problem with your indexes.

Perhaps if you made a new post with a different subject, more people will see it?
