Compaq Evo n600C Laptop SLOW

I was given a new Compaq Evo N600c 1.2GHz Laptop to replace my Compaq m500 750MHz Laptop. They both are running Windows 2000 Pro with SP3. THe new N600c takes longer to do anything!

I notice that whenever I try and do something, the dumb hard drive light on the N600c lights up and stays solid... during this time, forget about doing anything else on the Laptop, it's locked up until it's done.

The HDD is formated as NTFS with compression. I've made sure that indexing is disabled in the services and I've went through and turned off as many non-essential services as possible, but the problem is still there.

Any ideas? I don't have this problem with my m500, it might have a slower CPU, but the thing is really robust and plugs right on through doing mutiple things at once.

"Help!"

Thanks in advanced

Without knowing more about what services are running, I would say that it's the additional overhead of the hard disk compression. If free space on that drive is not an issue, I would recommend uncompressing the drive. See if that helps.

Great googly moogly... I didn't think about that. My e500 was FAT32, the new N600c I used NTFS with compression. I will decompress the drive tonight and see how it is in the morning.

I disabled some additional services since my last post that seams to have helped some, which include the Microsoft Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Trasnfer Service.

LOL, it says it ran all night and still says it will take another 9 hours. The drive is a 30GB drive and I have some 15GB of data on it.

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know if it helps once completed. I'm also planning a defrag next.
