Post error code 514, "Can't see cpu fan or chassis fan". Compaq D500 Eros desktop, Cpu 1.7.

Cpu fan is running and so is chassis fan. Chassis fan is add on. It has a lite built in. Tried connections to

header with both fans- tried disconnectiong chassis fan - tried connectiong cpu fan to both headers--tried

all combinations of fans 1 or both connected. Bios does not have any option dealing with fan. Tried adding

more time to the post to give cpu fan time to speedup. It's not getting hot - put a thermometer near cpu and it's

running cool. Anyone have any ideas? Nothing on the internet nor on HP/Compaq website. Can't find any

info.

Does this error prevent the machine from subsequently booting into the operating system?

You could try clearing CMOS. Check for a CLR-CMOS jumper on the motherboard, or just pull the battery for a few minutes. Make a note of any special (other than default) BIOS settings before doing this.

Or maybe look to see if there's a newer BIOS update available on the HP/Compaq website.

If the machine won't boot up an operating system, then try substituting the PSU just in case it is starting to fail, and maybe has voltage rail(s) sag.

Have you tried to connect another chassis fan, for testing purposes?

one without a lite?

the light may be interfering with the detection of said fan and cause this error to happen... e.g. resistance is higher...

it could also be, that the RPM sensor on one of those fans is damaged, and the only remedy is the replacement of the fans...

the last thing that it could be is that the mainboard is flaky and it can not detect the sensors at all...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

mainboard is flaky" is more likely than usual if both fans are running but the motherboard doesn't think they are running.

Good point Ben, "the light may be interfering with the detection of said fan and cause this error to happen... e.g. resistance is higher...". But adding a load, i.e. the l.e.d., would typically reduce the overall resistance.

So try replacing the fan with a bog standard item...
