For some reasons I need to upgrade the Compaq EFS on Openserver 5.0.6a in a ProLiant 800 box. When I installed the latest Compaq EFS 5.48 first disk image file, it asked me to enter the IP address for an NIC in a PCI slot. I made a mistake and entered a wrong number, not the one in the original NIC it has. After the third disk installation, I got a rebuild kernel error message and called me to choose "Retry", "Ignore" and "Cancel". I didn't know what's going on so I chose ignore. Then after the third disk installation completed, the EFS also completed! It has 5 disks indeed!

I checked my network config in scoadmin, I found that my origianl NIC's name changed to "NIC ????.??". After reboot, my net0 interface disappeared! I tried to remove the problem NIC and install a new one from the new drivers which EFS provided, I finally got an error in rebuilding the kernel. It said something like "Symbol referencing error" at the end of something like compiling system messages.

After checking my startup log, I found that my net0 was lost and suddenly net1 appeared but with some error messages on it. This box gets me a whole day to look at but still no idea how should I do next... Any hints?

Sorry for this box since I didn't have a full system backup before installing EFS... :(

Pls help this SCO newbie! Jack

First off - The efs has only three disks that need installing. The other is Boot Time Loadable Drivers and I don't remember what the last one is (NIC drivers?). Error messages are important and what exactly is displayed matters. ie the original "got a rebuild kernel error message" is the key to the problem.

To correct the problem:
remove any reference to the NIC in netconfig
if you can rebuild kernel good (you probably wont be able to).
(the following is directly copied from Have a look in /var/opt/K/SCO/lli/5.0.5a/llimdi

If netconfig does not list your network card, delete the line
for it from llimdi.

You may have to delete the following files/directoreis:
Note: this example uses e3H, use the correct identification for your
NIC:
/etc/conf/node.d/e3H
/etc/conf/node.d/net0
/etc/conf/pack.d/net0
/etc/conf/pack.d/e3H
/etc/conf/sdevice.d/net0
/etc/conf/sdevice.d/e3H

( change e3H to cnet ) for the proliant 800. You should now be able to relink the kernel without the network. restart and go into netconfig and add the folowing NIC:
Integrated Netelligent 10/100 TX UTP - Slot # 0, 1

Thanks stanhubble, you gave me an idea!! I have just done what you sugguested in other way: I removed the NIC in netconfig and it CAN auto-relink the kernel itself though I failed sometimes before. I checked all the cnet and net0 were also removed in /etc/conf/xxx.d. Then my box was in a clear stage without any network interface. I fully backup it and left the compaq NIC alone and didn't touch it anymore since I thought the NIC drivers in efs 5.48 has a bug on proliant 800. So I got a spare surecom NIC and plugged into it. After installed the driver, selected the NIC and auto-relinked the kernel in netconfig... IT WORKED!! And I thought efs was completed since I only removed those compaq Neteliigent NIC drivers and the scsi drivers were updated :D Thanks again!!
