Having a very strange problem on two identical boxes. Both servers running Arcserve 2000 Advanced on fully patched Windows 2000 box (SP2 and hotfixes). I have patched arcserve on both boxes and the new devices update, though i have seen the same behaviour on these boxes with and without both windows 2000 and arcserve patches.
here's my problem .....
Arcserve will not start a backup job even if the all the engines are running. If I create a job then stop and restart the engines, then the backup starts - however to get any updates in the activity log - i have to exit arcserve and restart it to see differences in READY-ACTIVE-DONE - it doesn't update on the screen. The jobs do backup and can be restored but for some reason provide no feedback and need to have the services stopped and started before the job starts - timed backups do not work either.
I have tried both the latest compaq driver from their website and the softpaq update, and the microsoft dlt driver from windows 2000.
Has anyone come across this problem before? it seems to be related to the DLT's in that they need prompting - is there any way I can debug this? I don't get any indication in event viewer or the activity log that there is a problem :(

Thanks

Hi Pigwhistler,
The win2000 driver and the COMPAQ driver you are installing is the wrong driver to use. You only need to install the Arcserv driver for the DLT driver and nothing else.

If the Driver update doesn't help boot to the F10 partition and follow these prompts 'System configuration/Configure Hardware/Review & Modify/View & Edit/ and then find the name of the SCSI controller connected to you DLT drive and set the SCSI speed from Auto to 'SCSI2.''

If you still have a problem, uninstall the driver for the DLT drive, Arcserv, reboot, reapply the Arcserv software and that software will automatically detect the tape drive and then install the driver for that DLT drive.

If this still this doesn't help as a remote possibility you can try to update the firmware of the tape drive with the SP14241.EXE which is found on the COMPAQ site.

Good Luck, If there are anymore questions please feel free to ask.
Sorry about the late reply.

Step one

Erase Arcserve from your systems.

Step Two

Install some backup software that works, Legato, Backup Exec, etc.

Step Three

Enjoy backups that you can actually restore - don't try this step with arcserve, even if it backs up you will get a mess when you try a restore.
