Hi all,

Have a Compaq DeskPro 2000 that refuses to boot. All I get is the error '1790 Disk Error'. The only other option is telling me to press 'F1' to boot, nothing happens when I do though. Never come across this before. Cannot even boot via Win98 Boot disc. Cannot get into setup or anything, which makes me think it could be motherboard or other system failure rather than HDD.

Anybody experience anything similar or could impart some pearls of wisdom?

Would be very gratefull!

Is the system using the original HD, or are you trying to install a new one?

Hi Ski,

Not orgional HDD. It was replaced about 3 months ago apparantly. No problems up until now. Very strange!

Haven't seen the message in years. Controller error of some sort based on what it used to be in the days of Seagate MFM controllers.
You might try a google search on the error message, even with the compaq as part of the search string to see if there is a common problem.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Can you enter setup after completely disconnecting the HD?

Have done a search in google and get some bites of info. Nothing reall pertaing to my issue. Will continue to search though.

Have not tried disconnecting HD and then trying to enter setup Ski.. when I go back onsite tomorrow will give it a go!

Cheers,

This is from another forum concerning the 1790 disk error:
I just underwent this surgery for the same Deskpro 4000/6266 MMX model after attempting to add a Ultra/133 40 GB drive from Maxtor. Also you have used the wrong ROM patch.
Try the following:
1. Reset the CMOS using the jumper settings (wait for atleast 5 mts.)
2. Flash the ROM using SoftPaq 12880 dated 3 Aug 1999 (check HP patch website).
3. Cycle power and boot the system using F10 diskette (SoftPaq 8126 dated 27 Aug 1998)
4. If needed, run PC diagnostics to check everything (SoftPaq 16085)
4. Save the settings and exit.
5. Cycle power to see if system boots.
6. The POST error 1790 shows up if a higher capacity (> 32 GB) disk has been installed and BIOS will show the number of cylinders as 0. A separate controller card will solve this error.

Hope this is of some help....
