Hi guys..

I gotta Compaq DDS4 20/40 DAT drive in a proliant ml370 server running Windows 2000 server.. well, when it was running nt4 server, it was backing up all of our data just fine.. once we updated the machine to win2k the backups are taking FOREVER!! They take so long I have to cancel them each morning.. so.. what's that sound like.. driver problem?!?! um..yeah.. but I can't find any drivers for them.. the backup is actually getting data from 4 other remote servers, which are also running win2k server.. (which were also upgraded from nt4) so, anyone got any ideas??

Sounds like you should check the Duplex Settings on your NIC. Maybe they're different than they were in NT4. If they're wrong you'll be waainting years for your data to be xferred from the other machines.

Try copy/paste from one machine to the backup server. If you do a 5-10MB file over a 100Mb connection it should take a few seconds maximum. If it says something crazy like 60 seconds to a few minutes they your NIC is set wrong. You should set it to 100Mb/Full Duplex if using a 100Mb NIC & Managed Switch or Autoselect if using a 7131 Gigabit NIC.

I don't thing it has anything to do with your tape drive.

What backup software are you using . . . usually for remote back-up you must install the remote agent for it to work properly.

Hey, great thinkin Pat!! I'll give that a try..

One thing that concerns me is the driver details of the tape drive show that the driver was created in "99", thats frickin old, and also that it's a microsoft driver, shouldn't it be a compaq driver?

Ricpinto: I'm backing up shares on each remote server via windows networking, thier all part of the domain so a single adminitrator privelaged user can do it without agents..

guess what I just found..

server1 (primary server, holds the tape drive) has old NIC drivers, not really old, but there is an update.. each of the other 3 servers has a DIFFERENT drive than the primary server.. each of thier driver dates are way old and not even correct manufacurer drivers.. hhmm.. ya think that'll do the trick??!?! I got new compaq drivers ready to install tonight!
