Hi there, Could anyone advise on the best practice to upgrade a Compaq CL380 disk array. We currently use 5 x 18g disks and want to replace them with 5 x 36g disks. I will of course be backing up all the data first of all. Could anyone give me a step by step procedure please to add the new disk, create the Q: D: E: etc etc

Thanks in advance

Paul.

I recently preformed this operation. Compaq recommends that you replace one of the 18GB drives with a 36GB drive and wait for the array to rebuild. Once you have replaced all the drives with the new 36GB ones, run the CR3500 utility to extend the RAID 5 volume (I am assuming you are using RAID5) to use the extra space. After that is done, you will have two options 1)(Assuming you’re running Windows 2000) Upgrade the volumes in to Dynamic so you can extend your volumes. (This works but is not supported by Compaq or Microsoft) 2) Delete all volumes on the array and recreate them using the new space.

After that you are done.

P.S. I would verify your backups before you start.

Regards,
Ben

I have used the procedure stated by sg4me many times and have found it very effective. There has only been one occasion where this has not worked and that was on a RAID array that was corrupt. That was a bottom of the scale scenario so don't worry. -----------------------------------------------------
