compaq armada e500 (windows XP) notebook - DVD Rom not playing

Everything worked fine upto a point on the compaq armada e500 notebook with win 98 and is much better with a recent windows XP installation except for the fact that the Toshiba CD/RW DVD-Rom plays CDs fine, but cannot seem to play DVDs for want of some kind of driver/firmware/update. I went to the Compaq support website, but did not find anything that looked right. Maybe I missed something?

Has anyone come up against this situation and resolved it?

Have you checked Windows Update for an updated driver?
