Compaq Advanced System Management Controller ML350 - G3

I got a wake up call this morning for our ML350 G3 servers being down. In the HP log it shows

PCI Bus Error (Slot 0, Bus 0, Device 5, function 0)

The system management homepage shows that
Bus 0 - Device 5 - PCI Compaq Advanced System Management Controller

From what I gather, this basically handles the HP logs, and some of the other options typically found under the "Compaq System Tools", but I can not find an extensive description on what it does. Does anyone know?

I want to know what will happen if it totally craps out.

This should hopefully light a fire under finance to give me the money to upgrade this archaic server.

What OS?

I've seen that error when the driver gets an unexpected hardware fault that is not in it's list.

Go through all the hardware logs on your OS. If your OS uses EFS extensions, upgrade to the latest supported EFS for your OS.

Server 2000

Its been running near perfectly for 6 years now. There has been no hardware / software / driver changes in over 2 years, but I will look into the driver.

I know enough about windows servers to be dangerous , but I was suggesting that the HP hardware monitor throwing the error (not the hardware driver itself) might have detected a fault it did not have a preset response to, and updating the HP monitoring software might allow the 'real' error to be unmasked.
