I am trying to add an extension to a Compact ICS phone system. This system has always had fewer than 9 phones. They have 7 handsets and voice mail hooked up to port 8. They are trying to add a 8th phone to the system. When I cross connect a phone to ports 9-12 I just get flashing arrows on the buttons display. Is this phone system only equipped with 8 ports for extensions or is programming needed? Please Help!!

You may have restricted software. Please post the Nortel number from the software card in the CICS.

Also, look in the FAQ section for the wiring of the CICS and be sure you are connecting to the correct pairs.

Connect an SLT phone to port 109. If you have "Dial Tone", then you have Restricted software (Up to 4 lines, up to 8 extensions). If that's the case you'll need to upgrade the software.

Check the SP code on your system to verify the above.

Thanks everyone for all of the input. I know very little about Nortel. I don't know how to look at the software card in the system. I started to open slot 1 on the system, but wasn't sure if it was just a door, or if it is in fact the card itself. I didn't want to take down the system as this is a State Police Station. I did hook up my butt set to ports 9-16. All of these ports gave me tone, not dial tone but more of a system tone. I tried dialing 9 or any other digit to break the dial tone but was unsuccessful. What do I need to do exactly to look at the numbers from the software card?

You would need to go into maintenance programming and look at the System version SP code.

If unsure how to program then best to get a Norstar tech in.

OK. I went into maintenance programming and the version is SP: 30BDK01 NAT

SP-30bdk01 shows up in my software chart as restricted to 4 x 8. Your hardware will support additional stations, but that software will not support them.

You will need to either upgrade the software card you have (which will require a trained tech) or buy a new card with unrestricted software on it. With such a small system, reprogramming from scratch is not a big undertaking.

OK. thanks everybody for all of your help.
