compact and repair problem

Hi,
I have a db i'd like to compact and repair but everytime i try it, it messes up the most recent record. It shows up as jibberish in the form but looks fine in the table.
i have a front and back end setup and do the compact and repair on each.
any one else have similiar issues?

i use ms access 2003 and the database is 2000 file format, should i try using access 2000 to compact it?
