Commvault Server Hardware Upgrade

Hi everyone,

We need to migrate the current Commvault server (v8.0 SP2, Media Agent, iData file) to a new box.

I was hoping that someone can outline the server migration steps considering the following:

- Licensing approach
- Commvault configs migration
- Magnetic Library properties (drive letters as on the original server)
- Media Agent - Storage Policies/paths/copies
- Copy the IndexCache to the new server

There is a server migration procedure described on Books Online that involves a third box which doesn't help in this case.

It's unclear from your post of you're migrating the CommServer, a Media Agent, or both.

If the CommServer:

* CommVault licensing works around the IP address of your CommServer. If your CommServer is not changing its IP address, you have no problem. Just make sure that the names you're using translate in DNS to addresses that work. If you are migrating to a box with a different IP address, you'll need to e-mail CommVault and ask them to issuie you with a new license.

* All configs are in the internal SQL database, called CommServ. Just back that up using SQL Backup or by running a Simpana full DR backup, and then transport the backup file to your new server where you can import it, using SQL Restore or Simpana's DisasterRecoveryGUI program in the Base folder.

If a Media Agent:

* All configurations are stored in the SQL database on the CommServer. You said that the drive letters are staying the same, so you have no real problems. Just make sure the contents of the mag libraries are copied from the old MA to the new one.

* You don't need to bring the index cache across, but you can if you want.


There is too much to document here but the above is a simple overview. Based on your question, I strongly recommend you get professional help with your migration.
