Communications Failure

I get this error when trying a backup of a SQL database on a remote server. It has failed at different points during the backup from time to time.

"A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent."

I have BE 9.0 running on a Dell Workstation Dual PIII (300MHz) w/256MB RAM w/ Win 2000 Server SP3. The SQL box is a Dell PowerEdge Dual P4 (2.2Ghz), 2GB RAM w/ Win 2000 Server SP3.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the Backup Exec Remote Agent installed?

If not, you can't backup a remote server.

Do you have the Backup Exec Agent for SQL Server 2000 installed?

If not, you can't use Backup Exec to backup SQL Server databases.

You CAN however (and the is the 'best practice') use the SQL Server commands (BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP LOG) to backup the databases and logs to disk. Then use Backup Exec to copy those files to tape.

Couple of things to looks for. When this happens, does the remote agent on either the SQL server or the backup exec server stop?

Other things to look for - are you able to run the backup at another time, like during the day? Does this work - if it does, what is happening on the server during the backup?

What is the HEX code at the end of the backup - have you done a lookup of it on the Veritas support website?

Also make sure you are running revision 4454, if you are running an earlier version, download it from Veritas downloads, and apply it to the backup exec server and the SQL server.
